What will this evening be about?

In June 2013 Edward Snowden came forward with documents proving that our governments implemented a hidden surveillance state of previously unheard dimensions. All essential aspects of our lives are being recorded, analyzed and acted upon in the interest of the authorities and often against public interest. Snowden wanted the general public to be able to decide how the governments´ surveillance capabilities should be used, instead of only a selected few making that decision in secret. The documents that were published since then prove many so called conspiracy theorists right, enabling an open discussion of these methods and the consequences for the first time.

Where do we take it from here?

More than one year has passed and essentially everything stayed the same. Our safety and freedom continue to be marginalized to benefit small corporate and political elites. Diplomatic manipulation, social control and economic spying continue unhindered. These practices strongly go against the public interest, causing great harm to the public good — take environmental pollution and TTIP for example. Our governments seem to be unwilling or unable to protect our privacy and therefore unable to ensure our safety from a growing totalitarian control exerted by the security state aiming to preserve the powers that be.

What to expect from the evening?

Matthias Miehl will give an overview of what is currently known about how we are monitored, which effects this has for our personal lives as well as for the society as a whole, and talk about chances to become active against these developments with as much or little effort you like. The majority of the time will be available for discussions.

Why should you attend?

Your rights are not natural laws set in stone for eternity. They easily fade away, if unguarded. If you want to have a say in what your government does and keep your country out of armed conflicts, you have to take even small steps now before it is too late. Once public opinion accepts mass surveillance as a necessary part of daily life, it will become nearly impossible to change anything with big brother and his little brothers automatically watching and sabotaging your each and every move.

We need a transparent government — not a see-through citizen.

Let’s get together and create something great.
